It’s true that I haven’t been on vacation since last January while in Costa Rica, and I’m starting to feel guilty. I feel guilty for wishing I could travel again while browsing at all the reduced flight deals happening in Expedia. Yet, I know that staying home is the best choice for me to do. So how can we, as travel enthusiasts, deal with it? With unprecedented times, how can we make our lives more adventurous? Thrilling? These thoughts made me wish I could feel like I was on vacation while at home.
So, I made it happen. For the past five months, I was able to make small, effective changes that drastically improved my entire lifestyle while staying home 7 days a week. It took a lot of trials and errors, but I believe my weekly routine has made life much more lavish while spending hours stuck in my room. If you’re looking to update your current lifestyle, keep reading to see tips on how you can achieve your staycation mentality.
Tips to Feel Like You’re on Vacation While at Home
Renovate your Space
What makes traveling fun for you? For me, I love the feeling of staying in a new place! So, I decided to completely revamp my space. This meant that I needed my bedroom to be fully upgraded and renovated. Depending on your taste in interior design, it may take a day or a few weeks to make your home projects complete!
Each month, I focus on a different area of my room. Whether it be my closet, doors, furniture, etc., I take my time researching and learning how to make my space embody my style. Pinterest, HGTV, and YouTube room tour videos have really given me decor inspiration for my bedroom lately. If you are interested in how you can revamp your own place with home decor inspired by travel, I wrote a blog that provides more detail here.
Incorporate Self-care into your Everyday Schedule
I realized how much I waited to pamper and indulge on the finer things in life until I arrived to my next travel destination. Good news is that I don’t need to do that anymore. I can just treat myself each and every single day! It may feel odd at first to take time out of your day to take a bubble bath, paint your nails, do at-home facials, but it has seriously made my life 1000 times better.
The trick is to do a new self-care treatment every day so it doesn’t feel like a chore. Perhaps use a hair mask on Mondays, manicures on Tuesdays, breakfast in bed on Wednesdays, and so forth. As long as you feel bliss while taking care of yourself, then you’re doing it the right way! To help you get started, I shared my favorite skincare products in this blog post.
Relive Travel Memories from Past Trips
Where have you traveled within the past year? Was there a specific product you enjoyed from that country? Maybe there was a specific dish you loved while visiting a local restaurant in a different state? Try finding a recipe for the dish and make it yourself at home! You can even purchase some travel-sized bathroom products to feel like you’re staying in a hotel! I think that imagination is best when it comes to finding creative ideas to relive your favorite travel memories. You might even make new hobbies out of it. Just be sure to share those fun ideas so others can do them, too!

Focus on Gratitude
Let’s be honest for a second. We all enjoy traveling because it makes us feel happy, right? Experiencing new things can make us realize how lucky we are to be alive. So what if we had that kind of mindset in our everyday 9-5 work days? I’ve been personally journaling a lot more lately, and it has given me a lot more mental clarity on the things I should appreciate more in life. Writing down my thoughts has also helped me understand how I can better myself. If we all can think deeply about what we are blessed with, then gratitude will be arriving in your hearts and minds everyday.
