As the folks would say….”Texas is the place I truly love to be!” Nothing beats the southern charm of the lovely city of Houston, AKA the place where I was born and raised. It always brightens my day when I meet a fellow Texan while I travel, so this post is inspired by those of you who ever thought of visiting my home city in the Lone Star State! Here are my top five favorite activities while I’m in my hometown:
1. Check out our local theaters/plays/concerts
- Ever since I was a little girl, music was a passion of mine. I performed a lot throughout my life, whether it was from my hometown, or from local singing competitions in the great city of Houston. Needless to say, I have a huge background in music- even got a bachelor’s degree in it! Because of my appreciation for live music, I always try to attend a concert or play, whether it be from TUTS, AKA “Theatre Under the Stars” for all the local talent and national Broadway tours, or attend a pop sensation’s concert at the Toyota Center. Watching someone take the stage makes me reminiscence on all my childhood memories, as well as creating new memories with the company I’m with. Check out TUTS for the latest shows in Houston!
2. Go to the park
When they say “it’s bigger and better in Texas,” that also includes how tremendously huge the parks are in the city! Some of my favorite parks that I like to take a stroll in are Hermann Park (which is easily accessible with the metro system), Buffalo Bayou Park (you can see the Houston skyline in some areas), and Discovery Green (mainly because it’s in the downtown area and they have a bunch of fun free events happening every weekend).
3. See our art district
What I love most about Houston are the free Thursday art admissions. That’s right! During a certain time frame every Thursday, you are able to visit art museums around the Houston art district without paid admission. This has been a favorite activity to do with my family when I was growing up. Seeing all the new art exhibitions and revisiting some of my favorite pieces really helped inspired me as a young girl. Ultimately, exploring art helped me find creativity on my interests in music, fashion, and traveling today. For more details about the free admission times, check here.
4. Go shopping
I love shopping around Houston, I mean, that’s a given with my fashion page. The city is filled with high luxury malls like, The Galleria, for all the latest arrivals from big brand stores. However, there are some amazing local shops, too. I usually like to take a look around my local thrift stores, or even visit some boutiques at the Rice Village. The cost of living in Houston is pretty affordable..which means the taxes aren’t so bad….which means I get more for my buck… which means more shopping. Not so bad, right? Being a big spender every once in a while isn’t so shameful.
5. Discover local food
This is probably my favorite thing to do in Houston because of the city’s diverse culture. With Houston being predicted as the fastest growing city in the US, you can expect that there are so many food options to choose from! A personal favorite is The Buffalo Grille for their amazing catfish fillets battered in cornbread flour. If you want a “Texan style” meal, go buy yourself some barbecue. Killen’s BBQ is popular for making some of the best barbecue in the city, and with a block-long line of customers awaiting for the restaurant to open outside every day, I say it’s a hit for local Houstonians.
I hope this is a great guide to your Houston trip! These are the main things I personally enjoy doing as an “every day” Houstonian, but go check out our visit site for more information! Gee says
I really enjoy Houston but I’ve never been to see any of the art district or seen any theatre there. On the list for my next visit. Definitely shopped and the food is to die for. Great city!
