The Most Colorful Hotel Near Venice Beach

Far away from Disneyland and the Hollywood Walk of Fame lies a colorful boutique hotel that’s conveniently less than 1 mile away from the beach. After spending my first trip to LA in DTLA, West Hollywood, and Beverly Hills, I wanted to escape the chic, bright La La Land lights to a laid back summer trip in the middle of Venice and Santa Monica. Needless to say, The Kinney Venice Beach hotel provided me everything I had ever wanted during my stay.It was no surprise that I would experience sunny skies and have sun-kissed skin while I was in Venice, but I was blown away by how much I felt at home in this hotel. From staying in the urban parts of Houston to now relaxing underneath the twinkling lights of California, the hip ambiance of the place immediately made me feel like I belonged. Every corner of this hotel truly reflected the retro, good vibes that the city offers and I’m so excited to give you all the details about my hotel stay.

Even before I stepped foot inside the hotel, I already got a clear concept of the experience I would get at The Kinney. The exterior design had a black, red, white, and blue logo sign with the building having a gigantic mural of people skateboarding and walking behind a bright blue backdrop. The mural looked inviting and made me excited to see what the hotel would look like inside!The bright colored exterior design of the hotel slightly contrasted with the interior design of the front lobby. It had a beautiful chevron couch with vintage record players placed on the counters. While it still gave a retro look, the color scheme was more toned down with more neutral decor pieces. I admired the mirrored tiles plastered on the walls which drew my eyes toward the “wanderlust” neon sign. Who wouldn’t stop by for a quick photo-op?

The front lobby service was wonderful and efficient when it came to helping me check-in. I initially had trouble with opening my hotel room (twice), but once one of the staff members assisted me with my hotel card, he went out of his way to give me a brief tour of my room! I appreciated how he explained the lighting, artwork, and bathroom layout before he left. It gave me a clear indication of the overall satisfaction of the hotel staff- people who enjoy their jobs make a huge difference in how I feel about my stay!My favorite part about my hotel room is the bedroom area! As a color enthusiast, I was immediately in love with the colorful paint splattered wallpaper and color accents of the bedding and bed counter tables. There are retro, contemporary art pieces in the bedroom and living area with beige and black chevron carpet throughout the entire hotel room. The living area had a speckled gray couch for a neutral touch from all the colorful decor pieces, and there was a vintage rotary dial phone placed on top of the wooden tables and chairs across from room. Before I got ready to leave my room to check out the rest of the hotel amenities, I spent a good moment dazing at the clear sight of the courtyard from my window with the aqua blue drapes framing the view. It’s home sweet home!

There’s so much more to see outside my hotel room! Each floor had multi-colored chevron carpet, and on the third level where I was staying, there is a huge mural that gave me a hardcore 70’s, lava lamp-colored aesthetic. The mural, which was drawn by LA artist Robert Vargas, used magenta, red, yellow, purple, and blue hues to hand paint closeups of men with their eyes and hair. My initial impression of it made me instantly think of the Beatles. To me, this mural is the spotlight of The Kinney! If you ever decide to stay at this hotel, bringing a camera is an absolute must.

When you enter the second floor, you’ll be able to access the courtyard! The courtyard has a jacuzzi and pool area, a chic bar station with a “Tell Me Yours and I’ll Tell You Mine” pink neon sign, striped beach chairs, colorful bean bags, pingpong tables, and a fire pit area. It is quite the entertainment area! If you went farther down the hallway area on either side of the courtyard, you’ll also find a hammock area to chill and relax. As a solo traveler, I appreciated the fact that the hotel provided space for hotel guests to socialize together. I imagine this area would be perfect for birthday or bachelorette trip bashes! My favorite part of the courtyard is how enchanting it looks during the evening with all the mini string lights above you. The ambiance is dreamy and magical, as if you’re in another world outside Venice (see the first photo for reference).

In the mornings, I headed out to the hotel dining room to try out their breakfast! Despite the menu having limited food and drink items, I enjoyed my meals there. I tried both items on the “savory” section of the menu, which are Ava’s Morning Burrito (not pictured) and Pierside Panini. Pierside Panini consists of scrambled eggs, black forest ham, 3 cheese blend, sun dried tomato pesto, basil pesto, and arugula. The meals were quick to eat and bring with me on-the-go prior to my morning sightseeings. Plus, I really liked their lattes!

During my hotel stay, I was given free access to the rental bikes provided at The Kinney, and I knew I wanted to take the time to bike around Venice and Santa Monica on my last day. I adored that matching red tires with the bike metalware- it really stood out from all the other bikes! Despite the fact that I spent more time trying to remember how to ride a bike gracefully, it was fun relearning how to bike and to be able to enjoy sightseeing in an eco-friendly form of transportation.If you ever wanted to stay at The Kinney, you can easily take an Uber from LAX to The Kinney. The Uber ride would range from $20-35 depending on the hour you arrive to Los Angeles. Depending on your itinerary, I would suggest renting a car if you are planning on sightseeing outside the city. However, I had plenty to do when I stayed three days within the Venice/Santa Monica area. After experiencing this hotel, I would highly recommend this hotel for young adults, especially if you are someone who enjoys taking vacation photos! Whether you are traveling solo or with a group, this hotel can equally be enjoyable for anyone who desires a unique hotel experience in LA.
