The places to check out fall foliage in New York are endless! The truth is, you don’t have to go far to enjoy the beauty of Fall. Living in New York City, I’ve always felt inclined to take a day trip along the Hudson line and explore nature amongst the changing colored leaves. The best part is, some of the best spots are only a quick train ride away!
Last year, I visited Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow and knew I wanted to take another day trip again when it was peak fall season. These charming small towns are the perfect spots to visit this time of year because the slow pace and easy-going culture make it much more enjoyable in pursuit of seeing fall foliage. Hope you enjoy reading more about my day trip to Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow and how you can easily visit here yourself.
Fall Day Trip to Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow
HOW TO PLAN
You can download the free app, MTA TrainTime, to purchase your train tickets in advance. While the ticket cost can depend on whether you visit off-peak or on-peak, a round trip ticket for an adult is ~$22.50. Since Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow are small towns, I was able to walk on-foot the entire day. Feel free to bring snacks for the train commute/walking trail, and I would bring a small backpack/crossbody bag to stuff your outdoor essentials.
WHERE TO EAT
I am personally blown away with the restaurants and cafes here! The cost for food is a little cheaper than getting it in the city, and I think the food quality is superb. Here are some of my top picks:
- Pik Nik BBQ – as a former Texan girl, I 1000% support the way they make their bbq! Their service is amazing and I appreciate the amount of sides that are included in the meal.
- The Cube Inn – I know a good Cuban sandwich when I taste one, and they definitely have amazing Cuban sandwiches here!
- Main Street Sweets – I love a good ice cream shop, but they also have amazing sugar dusted apple cider donuts! It’s truly a delicacy to try during the fall season!
WHERE TO SHOP
I would personally start the trip by walking over to Main Street from the Tarrytown train station. From there, you can stroll by and check out the boutique shops there. Here are my highlights to check out:
- The Swan’s House – This boutique has all the cutest home and decor accessories you need to have an enchanting and romantic home. I adore their vintage home furniture and their whimsical candles and artwork!
- The Cherry Door – Love thrifting? I personally think this thrift shop has a lot of great items at a discounted prices! I also love supporting shops that are volunteer-run.
- Bella’s Boutique – This shop has all the vintage goods you need! I find the service to be friendly and I enjoyed looking through the shelves to see some antique items and accessories.
WHAT TO DO
Once you finish looking at the boutique shops and restaurants, I would definitely explore and sight-see further out Main Street. I would recommend checking out:
- Tarrytown Music Hall – It’s a nice historical venue to take a photo! I love their architecture and it’s still running films, concerts, plays, and dances since the 1880’s.
- Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse – The views here are a beauty! There is a donation box (with a $5 suggestion) as you enter inside, but once you reach to the top, you see the nicest views of the Hudson River!
- Patriots Park – This is a small and charming little park! I adored the cobblestone bridge and the area is very pet-friendly!
- Headless Horseman Bridge – You’ll stumble upon the famous Headless Horseman Bridge along Broadway St. It’s actually quite beautiful for being a bridge known for it’s Halloween tale.
- Sleepy Hollow Cemetery – If you visit, I highly recommend visiting from the South Gate entrance. It’s such a spacious and beautiful cemetery that I found myself spend a few hours just walking through the entire area. There is also a nice outdoor walking area along the side of the cemetery that is beautiful for checking out fall foliage and enjoying nature.
