Let’s be honest, body hair is not exactly the most glamorous topic to talk about – and unfortunately, it’s been something I have dealt with my whole life. For as long as I could remember, I was always self-conscious about my legs. I had to shave twice a day (yes, that’s how much my hair quickly grew), and I avoided people touching them due to how bumpy and stubby it always felt. I tried using different types of razors, wax, sugar wax, Nair….and every single one of those methods felt like a temporary 12-hour fix. It was something I had to constantly maintain every day to the point where it felt like a burden in my everyday routine. If you can relate, please let me know in the comments!
During my teenage years, I remembered cancelling beach outings and being MIA to pool parties because I didn’t want people to see how stubby my body hair was. I couldn’t even spontaneously wear shorts without me planning two weeks in advance when I should wax. A huge portion of my life revolved around my body hair, and it made me insecure to the point where I was desperate to find a more permanent way to maintain it…. so I decided to do laser hair removal. While laser hair removal does market itself being a “permanent fix,” it is a treatment that progressively reduces hair growth to the point where there is at minimum 80% hair reduction.
After years of research, I decided to start my laser hair removal journey with Go Bare Laser Hair in Houston, TX. The results I have received from their services were incredibly life-changing. It transformed the way I felt when wearing a swimsuit, shorts, and skirt in public. Go Bare Laser Hair has given me a newfound sense of peace in the way I look at my body, and I am so excited to share every single detail about my leg hair removal process with you.
My Entire Laser Hair Removal Journey
Month 1
Treatment Experience
The first month of doing laser hair removal was exciting! Go Bare Laser Hair is actually located inside Sola Salons in the Houston Heights area. The ambiance of the place looked clean, minimalistic, and smaller in size to the standard salons in the city. For me, I preferred how comforting the smaller environment felt. The laser technician, Alanda Scott, was super welcoming during my consultation. and she really took the time to listen to my frustrations with body hair growth. While assessing my hair, she confirmed I had keratosis pilaris or “strawberry legs,” which is a skin condition for enlarged clogged pores and hair follicles due to dead skin, oil, and bacteria. Because my hair follicles are dark and I have a lighter skin color, I was qualified to do laser hair treatment.
First time tips:
- Shave your hair 1-2 days before your appointment! It’s really important to perform laser hair removal when your hair follicles are growing and can be easily located in the surface level of the skin.
- Depending on what body area you do laser hair removal, I suggest not wearing lotion/deodorant prior to the appointment. This can change the effectiveness of the laser hair removing process.
- Also, make sure to wear clothing that can easily expose/be removed during the laser hair treatment. For instance, I wore a lot of dresses and skirts when my legs underwent laser hair removal because of how efficient it was to lift and expose my legs.
- Make sure to always wear laser goggles (which should be provided from your technician) during your session!
Even before I met Alanda in person, we had been emailing each other back in forth about what I would expect during my appointment. Without hesitation, she reiterated the laser hair removal process with me just to make sure I was aware and felt comfortable about the process. Minutes before my first laser hair treatment, I did felt concerned about how painful it would be, but once I felt the laser beam, it actually didn’t bother me at all!
The laser was attached to a big machine, but the laser itself is lightweight and can be lifted in one hand. The laser also had a red light that beamed over my leg hair follicles. When it’s about to treat the effected hair follicle, it makes a light beep sound before I could feel a rubber band snap sensation throughout my legs. Once the treatment was over, my legs had some red bumps, but it completely went away after 15-30 minutes. The red bumps aren’t itchy or painful, and it’s actually common symptom that does indicate a positive reaction to treatment.
After Treatment
My legs already had a noticeable difference in hair growth reduction! I didn’t even have to shave until 2-3 days later (which is the normal hair growth rate for most people). I felt pretty content with the way I was able manage my hair growth with just one treatment since my legs didn’t feel bumpy or itchy. Based on the thickness of my hair follicles, I agreed to do laser hair treatments once a month in a 9-10 month span.
Month 2-4
Progress
The next 3 treatments continued to be very successful. My leg hair was much thinner and I could prolong not shaving for 5-7 days at this point. There was also a reduction in hair growth as well, which made me pretty satisfied with this phase of my progress. I noticed in every session that the laser felt slightly warmer as the treatment progresses. While I can’t confirm if it is due to my technician increasing the laser intensity or if I’m feeling it more due to having less hair follicles – I think it’s a combination of both!
However, Alanda always assured me that if I felt a lot of pain, she could easily change settings and/or give me breaks. With my high pain tolerance, I never felt the need to pause treatment since the pain levels never felt unbearable to me. The red bumps on my legs still continued to appear after every treatment, but it was explained to me that it was a common reaction and that it was working effectively. After 15-30 minutes, the red bumps eventually went away. Between appointments, I already felt more confident wearing shorts and skirts out in public. I really looked forward to the final results!
Month 5-7
Progress
During this phase of my treatments, I noticed that my leg hair wasn’t growing much any more. If any, it would grow shorter and thinner (similar to the thinness of peach fuzz). Also, the areas of leg hair that were still growing started to be noticeably patchy. At this point of the laser hair removal process, I didn’t really think about the appearance of my legs anymore, nor have I thought twice about what kind of bottoms to wear. During these months, I was aware of how comfortable I felt while wearing a swimsuit to the beach or short dresses out in public without the worry of my leg hair getting stubby throughout the day. The fact that I was hardly self-conscious about my leg hair was such a freeing feeling!
Month 7-9+
Progress
Because of the consistent amount of treatments I’ve received, I felt pretty comfortable about the laser appointment process. Due to some of my leg hair growing in small patches, I was unsure of when I needed to stop treatment. Thankfully, my technician was kind enough to let me know when my treatment should finish. We ended up continuing sessions beyond the average amount (which is 6 sessions). For my results, I ended up having 9 sessions total.
Final Results
Here are my legs, and it’s hair free! While the photo above shows more of my clumsy bruises and varicose veins (maybe I should treat those next?), I’m so happy with my results. While my leg hair isn’t fully gone (some grow in microscopic forms closer to the knee area), I’m so proud of finally saying that 97% of my leg hair is gone!
Pros:
- My body confidence has increased so much throughout these months! I feel really comfortable now with how my legs look and appear in certain clothing items.
- The appearance of my skin condition has always massively reduced in appearance.
- I rarely shave my legs – maybe 3 times a year?
- The customer service is exceptional at Go Bare Laser Hair. I love the intimate salon environment! Alanda has such a bright and sweet personality that makes you feel easily comfortable and calm.
Cons:
- I’m not exactly 100% shave-free. Yes, my leg hair is pretty much gone, but I still need to shave certain areas of my legs from time to time.
- I suggest saving up money to spend package treatment deals since the value is worth it. This might require a little extra time in your hands prior to beginning treatment.
- You will need to do follow-up laser hair treatment once a year to maintain the hair reduction.
Final thoughts? All in all, I was so incredibly happy with the results of my lower legs that I ended up continuing laser hair treatments on my under arm and upper/lower arm areas as well. Currently, Go Bare Laser Hair is offering laser hair + skincare services up to 75% off. For large body areas (like your legs), you can now get 8 treatment sessions for the price for under $500! For those with a history of epilepsy, I think the best recommendation is to ask your primary physician prior to scheduling a laser hair removal session. Since the treatment will consist of 6+ sessions, the trigger of one’s epilepsy will be different for every individual. I do believe that it is possible for those with a history of epilepsy to receive safe laser hair treatments, though. -Reesa
