Special thanks to Nish Nush for sponsoring this post. All opinions expressed are my own.
In the midst of honking cars, tall skyscrapers, and walking pedestrians, I was on a quest to explore delicious, creative, and aesthetically-pleasing food. Being in New York City, I quickly learned that the food scene is one of the finest from its diverse and culturally-fused selections. However, from all the food spots, is there one that cooks healthy and delicious vegetarian food? Although I am not a vegetarian, I have been recently eating meat way less and preferred tasting vegetarian and vegan options while I was in the city. When Nish Nush opened their doors for me to try a sample of everything in their menu, I was absolutely floored with their amazing, flavorful food.Nish Nush is known for its traditional Mediterranean dishes cooked with fresh, quality ingredients daily. Not only do they offer vegetarian food, but they include gluten-free options in their menu, too. In a matter of a few short years, they have been one of the most popular vegetarian restaurants in the city ranked 4.5/5 stars with over 500 reviews in Yelp. Prior to my visit, I did not know what to expect with my lack of knowledge in Mediterranean food. However, I was excited to experience tasting their delicious menu.
As I took a good view of the restaurant before heading inside, I was admiring the industrial exterior design of the place. The Nish Nush sign has a bold font with rustic metal that really blended in with the urban style of New York. I noticed the open windows that allowed guests to enjoy their dining in natural light, which was a great marketing strategy due to the fact that I could smell the aroma of fresh Mediterranean food. It was enough for me to want to invite myself inside.
Upon entrance, I was fond of how the interior design cohesively blended the urban design with its industrial-style fixtures, wooden counters, and metal and bolt lining around the counter tops. It gave off a casual contemporary aesthetic to the space. However, when I noticed the metal teapots and little trinkets of candle holders and cups decorated around the counter spaces, I appreciated how they added Middle Eastern decor in its space to fit their restaurant food style. After I introduced myself to the manager, I freely chose the table by the windows as I waited for my food.
I was in HEAVEN when I was presented with my meal! The manager told me I was tasting a little bit of everything in their menu: roasted cauliflower, roasted beets, tender Moroccan carrots, six falafel in three flavors on top of romaine lettuce, homemade hummus, and a variety of dipping options with schug, chickpea hummus, and tahini. On top of the meal, it also included pita bread to happily combine all my food and toppings together. Never have I been so floored with a presentation of Mediterranean food in my life! Although this exact dish is not offered in their regular menu, the closest dish in similarity to this one would be the falafel trio for $12.75 (really affordable for New York pricing).
Although I knew very little about Mediterranean food, I thoroughly enjoyed trying out every single food and topping on my dish. The aspect of not knowing what to expect made me feel like a kid experimenting food items together! The falafel really complimented well with the veggies, creating a perfect blend of crispy texture and rich flavor. I could tell my dish was freshly made from the coloration and rich seasoning of each food as I placed them on top of my pita bread. When eating, one thing I immediately fell in love with was their hummus! It was super creamy, naturally rich, and it had a nice pinch of spice on top for flavor. If you could order only one thing from their menu, the hummus is worth flying yourself over to NYC to taste! I later learned from the manager that Nish Nush’s hummus and falafel are a specialty, which was no surprise to me. To this day, I have yet to find another hummus as good as Nish Nush’s.
As a non-vegetarian, I was completely full and satisfied with my meal! Based on my experience, I believe that the Mediterranean flavors and toppings are enough for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians to enjoy. In fact, I would willingly become vegetarian if more restaurants like Nish Nush were available in Texas! When dinins, keep note that the portion sizes are huge and could easily be shared with another person. Nish Nush is a great food spot if you were on a budget and wanted to dine at a trendy, casual place in New York.
