My pet dog, Rajah, and I team worked again to give you our annual DIY Halloween duo costume! I mean, it’s been a while since I’ve posted about our Scooby Doo and Legally Blonde costumes, and it feels great to spend my favorite holiday again with my favorite pooch! Every year, I reflect deep within myself to channel a character that I want to embody…and this year, I really wanted to be a Filipino Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz.
And yes, Dorothy is the classic, quintessential costume that every girl has at least done once in their Halloween years, but there’s something about Dorothy’s resilience through adversity that really impacted me as a young child. Her determination to find her way home makes me want to skip along with her in the Yellow Brick Road. The fact that she was also open to bring others along her journey and inspiring them to find courage, love, and wisdom is the type of woman that any girl should aspire to be.
Plus, who could forget her sidekick Toto?! The silky haired dog was her comfort throughout the movie! For me, Rajah has been my complete rock when I feel so tired and down after traveling back to back. He is the Toto to my Dorothy, and I’m so thankful to have a furry partner that completes me in this same way. So, here’s our fun DIY Halloween tutorial about how you and your own pet dog can be Dorothy and Toto this Halloween season!
Dorothy Gale DIY Halloween Costume
Outfit items:
- Dorothy has the iconic white button shirt with puffy sleeves that makes her look so girly and classy all at once! I was able to dig deep into my closet to find my old white button down shirts from when I was in high school – however, there are SO many white shirts like to choose from today like this Shein top! Below are some similar white blouses for you to purchase at an affordable price.
- For her dress, Dorothy either wears white and blue plaid, checkered, or striped patterns. Depending on which look to go for, I say that it’s important to be open minded with what is out there in stores! Finding a dress that is in a fit and flare shape that is midi/short length is ideal for her costume. I was able to snag a dress perfect for this costume from Amazon, however, I found other great options below.
- Her iconic sequined red shoes are what makes her outfit, am I right? Finding solid red shoes isn’t difficult at all to find – however, keep in mind that the closed toe, one strap, and short heel are more authentic to Dorothy’s shoes in the movie. These sequin red pair of shoes are pretty accurate, but you can also see similar ones below.
Makeup and Hair:
- If I could describe Dorothy’s makeup, I would say that it’s natural and youthful! When I checked her makeup, the key items she uses is bright pink blush, neutral colored eyeshadow, and a red lip. Here are some makeup products below that would be great for Dorothy’s makeup look:
- You can’t finish off Dorothy’s look without wearing some braided pigtails! Since my hair is pretty short, I opted for modifying my look to have voluminous pigtails instead. My tip is to make sure you have lots of hairspray to keep your hair from having huge flyaways and tying the ends of your hair with a white ribbon.
Toto DIY Halloween Costume
Costume:
- Rajah didn’t need to do much expect be himself! However, Dorothy always brings a wicker basket for Toto to fit inside. So when you’re out and about with your dog, make sure to take a basket with you to carry! My dog is a little too big to fit inside a standard sized basket, but here are some options you can check out that would go great with Toto’s costume:
