The end of summer is getting closer, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t stop enjoying the outdoor weather in New York City! Throughout the spring & summer season, I’ve been lucky enough to explore different parks that I wish I knew before I lived in New York City. It definitely would have saved me the trouble figuring out which ones are instagram-worthy and which ones are bland. In writing this blog post, my dear readers, I hope it inspires you to experience it yourself if you’re ever in my city too!
The truth is, there are so many gardens and parks to choose from in the city. To be specific, there’s over 1,700! Like most things about NYC, it can be pretty overwhelming to choose which ones are worth the visit. So, I’ll be sharing some insider scoop on the underrated parks and local gardens in NYC. While they aren’t talked about as often, they’re definitely worth the subway ride to see. So keep reading below to find out which ones you should visit on your next trip to New York City!
Underrated Parks and Gardens Worth Visiting in New York City
Carl Schurz Park
East 86th Street &, East End Ave, New York, NY 10028
This 15-acre public park is quaint in comparison to some of the neighboring parks nearby. However, the main park trail gives tranquil vibes that overlook the East River. During the spring, you can expect to enjoy some seasonal blooms and there are a ton of spacious areas where you can have a picnic with friends. My favorite part of the park is the garden area by the Peter Pan monument, which gives fairytale garden vibes! Have a pet? If you walk down the park there are areas that are dog-friendly and great for your canine friend to roam freely.
Elizabeth Street Garden
Elizabeth St, New York, NY 10012
When you think of Nolita, you immediately think of streets full of fancy boutique shops and gorgeous cafes. However, if you explore more of the neighborhood, you’ll find the most gorgeous garden in the middle of Spring Street! What I appreciate about Elizabeth Street garden is that they have one-of-a-kind sculptures that give a darling touch to the surrounding greenery. This one-acre garden has limited spots for seating on a busy weekend, so keep that in mind when you visit! However, this independent-led garden is 100% volunteer-based, so you can immediately feel the care and love this neighborhood has for this garden.
Socrates Sculpture Park
32-01 Vernon Blvd, Queens, NY 11106
If you’re a fan of art, you’ll love visiting this park in Queens! This fun-sized park was once a landfill, but now is a home to some of the most amazing sculptures in the city. When I visited, I would describe the sculptures as having a modern and contemporary aesthetic. However, if you visit multiple times throughout the year, you’ll discover that there are always new sculptures being installed in the park. So no two visits would be exactly the same! What also makes this park beautiful is the waterfront views facing the Manhattan skyline. This park also often hosts free public festivals and events throughout the year, so I definitely recommend checking their site to find out more!
Conservatory Garden
1233 5th Ave, New York, NY 10029
Need to find a park that’s great for romantic strolls? The conservatory garden is perfect for the occasion! This garden is quite possibly the most whimsical garden I’ve visited in Manhattan! Although it’s located in Central Park, not many tourists know of this garden because it’s located in the northeastern part of the park. But trust me when I say that this garden is worth experiencing in-person. Along Fifth Avenue, you’ll discover the entrance has Victorian black fences that look inviting to come inside. Upon entrance, you’ll immediately get European vibes as you overlook the fresh green lawn and mega-sized single jet fountain in the middle. As you walk around the garden, you’ll be amazed at the beautiful blooms and fresh vines around you. This garden also has a greenhouse inside, and small parts of the garden is under construction due to renovations. However, this garden will have a fresh new look Fall 2022, so be prepared to add this to your must-see list!
